Sometimes I can’t always turn to the inside lane. I’m sorry, but I do my best. It’s a big wagon, the wheel base is 120”

Maryland does it better. There will be 2-3 lanes turning left, they will be in the far left lane and decide they want to be in the far right turning lane in mid-turn. It is generally fantastic.

I know another place that does this; Saudi Arabia. We called it the “Saudi Sweep” and we usually either gunned it in an intersection to outrun this or hung back till everyone figured out where they needed to be.

I hate Maryland.

I've had enough close calls because of this where I know it's not common knowledge. You go into the lane closest to you, mirror/shoulder check then move to the right lane. However, in reality, it's just "Fuck it, I'm going here."

Where I live you’re allowed to turn into either. Still makes sense to go on the inside though.

On roads where there are two lanes for making lefts, DO NOT turn into the other lane you are in... eg. if I am in the left lane, don’t turn into the right lane. I see people do that far too often.

Its the law in WI, so is the right of way of oncoming traffic turning right that no one seems to follow.

Here in Louisiana, oncoming drivers *expect* you to turn right into your near lane, so they just go ahead and make the left in front of you. Half the time, they also slide too far to their right and you have to dodge them. Just another atrocity that makes up Louisiana driving.

I did not know this was a thing - coming from a RHD country. Mind you here in Michigan everyone seems terrified of turning left regardless.

In Texas, you must turn left into whatever lane cuts off either the person turning let next to you or the person turning right opposite you.

Not advised (unless abundantly clear). Because of the guy turning right into the far lane. Can you right on red in California?

Several years ago a woman got into an accident while making a left turn. She was cited for improper left turn or something.

Long story short she sued and the case against her was dropped because the state law was “unconstitutionally vague”.

There are 2 intersections in town I constantly have issues with (as in almost every time). Both have 2 left turn lanes and both have the right turn lane with a straigh or left turn option. It doesn't matter which lane I'm in, the driver in the other lane comes into mine without looking. I have been cussed at and flipped off many times by the offender flying into my lane as if I was in the wrong. One instance someone tried going straight from the far left lane and almost t boned me.

How about three lanes turning into SIX? Granted, this is a right turn, but the same principles apply. And it’s all laid out to avoid confusion.

Kinja'd!!!

Everything is well marked. No less than SEVEN large signs are posted in advance, spread across the half-mile leading up to the intersection so everyone has ample opportunity to find their target lane. And once you arrive at the intersection, guide-lines show you which lanes you can use without bumping into the vehicle next to you.

Kinja'd!!!

There is no excuse to flub this up. And even if you’re a little flustered by the abundance of sings and road markings, at least you know what to look for the next time you roll through. Anyone commuting through here regularly should have it figured out well before the end of their first week.

I will disagree, I lived in StPete/Tampa for 10 years before coming here. I’ll take Florida drivers ANYDAY over Maryland.

A common complaint for Florida drivers is they panic in the rain and drive slow. Yup, Maryland does that too...I’ve seen cars stopped at overpasses...but now also take into consideration it gets cold here. So if it is cold and raining/wet, you may as well walk to your destination. No one goes above 35.

Because abject stupidity. Two key things need to be considered when dealing with traffic flow. Safety and efficiency. You can achieve greater *insert quantifiable unit here* of both by making traffic more predictable. This system creates a greater number of options for the driver turning left, for no conceivable reason. There is no benefit. It isn’t like there are 2 lanes turning left. There is still one, so traffic can’t move any faster. In fact, it will probably move slower due to people not being decisive enough to pick a lane (which means more confusion and more accidents). In addition, this arrangement means oncoming traffic turning right can no longer turn at the same time as those turning left, which will slow down traffic coming the other way. All things considered, this system does not improve efficiency, and possibly makes it worse. It does the same thing with safety. Sooo...

And those big signs are on BOTH sides of the road, so even if you’re in the process of passing a truck that happens to be blocking your view, there’s bound to be another sign in your periphery.

I need more context with this. Do the people who are making the left turn have the right of way? If so, people waiting to make a right wait their turn. If people did this around here, there would be mass chaos and those with the actual right of way (those turning left) would stop in the intersection and wait for the right turner to finish. Also, you shouldn't be in the passing lane if you aren't passing.

I don’t have a problem with people turning into either lane. Where I learned to drive you just go after one another anyway (protected left turn goes first, if it’s not protected they just go last). I think it causes more problems if left turners and right turners go at the same time but actually want to go in the other persons lane for the next turn.

Another reason why I hate California drivers. I got in a fight with my wife over this about the legality in California because I will sit at a right on red yelling at people “illegal left hand turn Assholes!” Turns out it is legal and I'm just an asshole who won't get to turn right on red with oncoming left traffic.
